New Liverpool JMU degree to encourage small business entrepreneurs – Business News – LDP Business – Liverpool Daily Post.

Here is a great opportunity for small business owners or prospective new business people to become more entrepreneurial. The course had been devised by Seamus O’Brien, principal lecturer in business around the goal of developing a business plan in the final year, rather than the traditional dissertation.

A fully developed business plan is so important to successful businesses, giving meaning and purpose to the aspirations of the business, creating shared values throughout multi-disciplinary organisations, large and small.

This degree course is thought to be the first of its kind.

    Better Business Finance.

Funding for growth is a big issue for many small businesses. Many will need financial support to implement their plans for growth, enabling them to buy in the expertise that they will need to be successful.

Although initiatives have been around for a while in the form of Leadership and Management funding, funding for innovation etc. here is something to add to the mix: a website bringing together advice and funding in one place.

Not all the information is populated yet, but you get the idea. If you have a growth plan and require additional financial assistance, this website is one starting point. It has some useful help and support information too.

We all expect Local Enterprise Partnerships to deliver funding, but it will take much longer than some businesses can afford to wait to get LEP funding through. In the meantime, banks are willing to lend in some cases.

BusinessDay – RICHARD BRANSON: When small-business owners think big.

If anyone is qualified to talk about business development, Sir Richard Branson certainly is. That said, there are some interesting comments in this article that bear further examination. For instance, Sir Richard suggests the success of Virgin is due in part to the organic nature of it’s growth. Of course, he is right. But at the same time, many businesses suffer terminal decline for this very reason. Most businesses benefit for having a structured growth plan.

However, this brings us on to the most interesting comment Sir Richard makes. He says that he and his friends made Virgin a success because they did what they enjoyed doing, following their intuition for new business ideas.

Every business owner should have a vision, a passion for the core purpose for their business and Sir Richard is a fine example. The point, though is that he didn’t know what it was when he started. He took the first small step all those years ago and started something big.

Business owners need to find their MOJO

Inspired by my first MojoLife meetup with Andrew Thorp and Sara Knowles, here is a thought about a parallel between facing a career change / redundancy challenge and running a business. These might sound like opposite ends of the work spectrum: many people facing redundancy will look at business owners as the lucky ones, in charge of their own destiny.

The reality is that many owners of SMEs need help to find their MOJO.

Faced with the myriad problems of being the Technician, the Manager and the Entrepreneur (from The E-Myth by Michael E Gerber) they are often foundering on the rocks, wondering what happened to the dream they once had. Where do they go for support? Business Advisers, Management Consultants, Accountants, Solicitors? Anyone out there?

Along with my colleagues at Business Doctors, I advise / help / support SME owners, but can I help with MOJO? Perhaps.

Purpose is the driving force behind many great businesses, and if you are the owner, you need to understand the purpose before you can rediscover your MOJO. A business is more than vehicle for making a living (not always, but often), it is a way of life, a community, an ideal. It is many things to many people. It gets them out of bed on a cold morning, makes them stay the extra 1/2 hour after work to get the job finished. It gives people a purpose.

Clearly understanding the purpose (we call it “core purpose” in our strategic review process) will surely help you rediscover your MOJO. And that has to be a good thing.

If you are a business owner and want to rediscover your MOJO, get in touch with me.
