Small businesses should not have to bankroll the big boys | Chuka Umunna | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk.

This post is a reminder that smaller businesses have to be keenly focused on their own cash-flow, rather than allow the terms under which they trade to be too flexible. In fact, there is a strong argument for NO flexibility in terms, even though this goes against the grain for many business owners, brought up on the UK culture of “you trust me, I trust you”. Terms of business simply need to be clearly stated from the outset and adhered to as a matter of course for every business transaction.

Larger organisations, with stronger cash reserves, will focus on getting the business done to their satisfaction, rather than paying for it. The important point is that they don’t necessarily intend to cause cash problems for smaller suppliers, but simply hang onto invoices until outstanding issues with orders are dealt with.

The issue of trade debt is endemic in the UK, that is certain. Smaller businesses need to be stronger in tackling it.

    Better Business Finance.

Funding for growth is a big issue for many small businesses. Many will need financial support to implement their plans for growth, enabling them to buy in the expertise that they will need to be successful.

Although initiatives have been around for a while in the form of Leadership and Management funding, funding for innovation etc. here is something to add to the mix: a website bringing together advice and funding in one place.

Not all the information is populated yet, but you get the idea. If you have a growth plan and require additional financial assistance, this website is one starting point. It has some useful help and support information too.

We all expect Local Enterprise Partnerships to deliver funding, but it will take much longer than some businesses can afford to wait to get LEP funding through. In the meantime, banks are willing to lend in some cases.

    Greater Manchester Chamber Challenge Chancellor

Chamber News – Chancellor Must Deliver a Convincing Pro-Growth Budget.

The Greater Manchester Chamber is the largest in the UK with over 5,000 members, so the chancellor should take note of it’s editorial comments here. As George Osborne is MP for a North West constituency he needs to read this and ponder.

There is much uncertainty in the SME community at this time. Funding for business growth is top of the agenda for many SMEs because they need support if substantial growth plans are to be made and achieved.

In Yorkshire & Humberside there is a new Leadership and Management fund, delivered by Exemplas and the North West needs similar funding support for SME owners. The budget must take account of what is required for businesses to thrive in regional areas and DELIVER.
